Meet Maddie Castle: A Handler Starting Again

Maddie Castle’s first morning on the page is uncomfortable. Her right knee hurts, getting around takes effort, and the coffee is hardly an incentive to get moving. The Handler introduces a woman trying to build a working life around circumstances she would never have chosen.

She has moved from police work into private investigation, but clients are scarce. When a mother she knows calls for help, Maddie hears the desperation behind the offer of payment. She needs the money. She also knows she would go even if the woman had little to give.

What she carries from police work

Maddie remembers people after their immediate trouble with the law has passed. She has checked on this family before, hoping the son she once arrested was finding a better direction. Her account of him pays attention to his circumstances and his mother’s efforts.

That concern sits alongside a dry, sometimes prickly voice. Maddie is much more comfortable with dogs than with adults making small talk about her life. Her first-person narration lets the reader hear both her sympathy and her impatience without requiring either to disappear.

Taking the work seriously

Maddie’s background as a police K-9 handler matters because she cares about the responsibility involved. She took night classes while working at the department, wanting to understand the animals she handled and help others do the work well.

When she sees Tempest again, the dog she remembers as an eager puppy has become frightened and withdrawn. Maddie has to pay attention to the animal in front of her. Progress takes observation, adjustments, and trust. When she makes a handling mistake, she acknowledges it.

That willingness to keep learning gives the partnership its weight. Maddie has expertise, physical limitations, and reasons to doubt how her own life is going. Helping Tempest gives her a difficult, immediate task she believes is worth doing.
