Meet Cassie Quinn: Art, Everyday Life, and the Unexplained

A job she enjoys. A friend who checks on her. A home in Savannah, with a cat ready to complain when she comes through the door. In Path of Bones, Cassie Quinn is trying to appreciate the everyday parts of a life she is rebuilding.

There is another part of that life she cannot neatly put away: Cassie sees and speaks for the dead. Their presence can interrupt a quiet evening as readily as any ordinary visitor, bringing questions she does not automatically know how to answer.

A life worth returning to

Cassie studied art history at the Savannah College of Art and Design. At the SCAD Museum of Art, she works as an art preparator, spending her days with artifacts and displays. She can imagine becoming a curator someday, even if looking far ahead still feels difficult.

These details give her something tangible to care about outside a mystery. So do her friendships. She bakes lemon bars for a friend’s ill husband and tries to spare that friend another worry. At home, her cat, Apollo, brings familiar demands into a world that also contains unfamiliar visitors.

An uncertain conversation

Cassie has years of experience with the dead, but their behavior does not follow one reliable set of rules. Some communicate in words; others use images. Some can move objects, while others pass through them. Encounters may end before she understands what a spirit needs.

That uncertainty gives her role in a mystery a particular appeal. Meeting a ghost still leaves her with the work of listening and trying to understand. For readers, the question is not settled simply because someone from beyond the grave appears.

The opening chapters also make room for the effects of Cassie’s past without requiring a new reader to learn every painful detail at once. She is finding comfort in work and friendship while making space for experiences few people around her share.
