Meet Jack Noble: Judgment Under Pressure

Noble Beginnings book cover

Jack Noble is keeping watch outside a house in Baghdad when Noble Beginnings opens. Inside, a CIA team is carrying out its assignment. Outside, Jack has time to study the street, consider the people giving him orders, and wonder why he and Bear keep being left at the door.

That opening puts you close to the quality that makes Jack compelling: he pays attention. He notices danger in the street, tension among the men he works with, and the distance between an official assignment and what he sees happening in front of him.

Capable, with plenty to question

Jack is a Marine working on loan to the CIA. Experience has taught him to stay calm when a situation turns dangerous, although his own narration admits to trembling hands afterward. That small detail gives the action a human scale. You hear the confidence he needs to do his job alongside the physical cost of doing it.

His voice also has an edge. Being excluded from a briefing or treated as expendable earns a sharp observation. Readers who enjoy a close first-person perspective get Jack’s running assessment of the mission and the people around him as events unfold.

The person he trusts

Bear has been Jack’s partner and best friend since their last day of recruit training. In the opening chapter, Jack names him as the one person he trusts in Iraq. Their shared history gives the story an immediate point of stability in a setting full of suspicion.

Then Jack encounters a captive family, including two children. His reaction makes the conflict personal: he wants the children removed from the room, and he is willing to challenge the men running the operation. The consequences belong to the novel. The choice tells you something essential about the man making it.
